Making low-carbon travel possible, for all.
It might sound like a myth, but you can actually take a train to Sicily! Seems unlikely, right? My first thought was: How does that even work—does the train just skim across the water? 🤯 Surprisingly, it kind of does. The carriages are separated, carefully loaded onto a ferry, and transported across the Strait of Messina. A train… on a boat! Definitely not your everyday rail journey.
All Rails Lead to Rome 🇮🇹
The first step is getting to Rome, which is well-connected to cities across Europe. Whether by high-speed train, night train, or even a scenic detour, reaching Italy’s capital is easy. Once there, board a southbound train to Messina. You can go direct or break up the trip with stops—perhaps Naples for its legendary pizza 🍕 or Salerno to soak in some coastal beauty. No matter what, the route hugs the shoreline, offering unforgettable views.
The real excitement begins at Villa San Giovanni. Here, the train is split into sections and carefully rolled onto a ferry. Passengers disembark, free to stretch their legs and enjoy the sea breeze 🌊 while the train takes its own short voyage. In just half an hour, you arrive in Messina, where the train is reassembled and ready to roll deeper into Sicily. From there, destinations like Palermo, Catania, and Siracusa are all within easy reach.
